Sharks Men:

            Bernardo: Handsome, proud, fluid leader of the Sharks, with a sardonic chip on his shoulder; baritone. LARGE DANCING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME SINGING

            Chino: Shy, gentle, sweet-faced young boy, the intended husband of Maria; baritone. FEATURED ACTING ROLE- SOME SINGINGAND DANCE

            Pepe:  Lieutenant to Bernardo, typically proud, and resentful of discrimination; baritone. FEATURED ACTING ROLE- SOME SINGINGAND DANCE

            Indio: Typically proud, and resentful of discrimination; baritone. SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING

            Luis: Typically proud, and resentful of discrimination; baritone. SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING

            Juano: Typically proud, and resentful of discrimination; baritone. SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING

            Others: Depending on cast needs, other Sharks may be cast; tenor and baritone- all will sing and do some dance.

      Sharks Women:

            Maria: Lovely young and obedient immigrant Puerto Rican girl, excited and enthusiastic about her new life inAmerica, but with stubborn inner strength that allows her to evolve into a strong woman; soprano. LARGE SINGING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME DANCE

            Anita: Older (20’s) and wiser in the ways of the world, flashy, sharp-tongued, and with a knowing sexuality; alto/mezzo-soprano. LARGE SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Rosalia: Young Puerto Rican girl, more demure, not too bright; mezzo-soprano. Indio’s girlfriend. LARGE FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Consuelo: Tough, young Puerto Rican girl with bleach blond hair and lots of baubles; mezzo-soprano. Pepe’s girlfriend. FEATURED SINGING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME DANCE

            Francisca: a young, quirky girl who is not very bright, Luis’ girlfriend, hangs out with Maria, Rosalia, and Consuela FEATURED SINGING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME DANCE

            Teresita: DANCER/ SINGER

Jets Men 

            Tony: Handsome, older teen-ager, who has outgrown the Jets; tenor/ high baritone. LARGE SINGING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME DANCE

            Riff: Glowing, driving, intelligent, slightly wacky leader of the Jets; tenor. LARGE SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Diesel: Lieutenant to Riff, big, slow, steady; baritone. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Baby John: Youngest member of the Jets, awed at everything, even being a Jet;

                  tries to act like a big man, but is vulnerable; baritone. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

          A-Rab: Small of stature, enjoys everything, takes nothing seriously, unaware, can be explosive; baritone. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Action: Most aggressive member of the Jets, a cat-like ball of fury; baritone. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Snowboy: Bespectacled, self-styled expert; baritone. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Others: Depending on cast needs, other Jets may be cast; tenor and baritone.

      JET WOMEN:

            Anybody’s: Scrawny teen-aged girl, pathetically dressed to imitate the Jets, and wants desperately to be taken seriously by them. FEATURED SINGING/ DANCING/ ACTING ROLE

            Velma: Riff’s girlfriend, young, slithery, sexy, lost in a world of jive. FEATURED DANCING/ ACTING ROLE- SOME SINGING

            Graziella: Girlfriend of Diesel, impressed with herself. FEATURED ACTING ROLE- SOME DANCE

Minnie: Baby John’s girlfriend

Clarice

Pauline: A-Rab’s girlfriend

      The Adults:

            Doc: Middle-aged drug store owner, tired and worn out.

            Lieutenant Schrank: Plainclothes policeman used to being in charge, superficially pleasant to cover his venom, fear, and bigotry.

            Officer Krupke: A not-too-bright street cop.

            Glad Hand: Nerdy, overly cheerful and ill-equipped social director at the local gym dance. In our production this will be played by a female.

 

      SOMEWHERE SOLOIST: This is an offstage female soloist that sings a gorgeous solo. In different productions it is assigned to different characters- in our production it will be auditioned and assigned as unconnected to any other role.
